The city is surrounded by an abundant fauna that possesses a large endemic population, with distinctive birds such as the Cuban Trogon (Tocororo, the National bird of Cuba), the Cartacuba, the Camao (Grey-headed Quail-dove), the Cuban Emerald (zunzun) or colibri, the Pato Huyuyu and the green woodpecker although it is common to see along the coasts elegants seagulls and pelicans. The zone also has many varities of lizards, hutias, wild porcs and cattle.
